Lifehack: Use rimfire for cheap reps

We spend a lot of time talking about high-end defensive carbines and custom carry guns, and the price of quality defensive ammunition reflects that focus. It can cost an absolute fortune to keep your skills sharp with proper centerfire training. The result is that too many shooters let their fundamentals slip, turning every range trip into an expensive validation exercise instead of a real learning session. The most practical, cost-effective way to fix this—and the piece of equipment that is consistently overlooked—is a dedicated rimfire trainer.

A .22 LR pistol or rifle is the ultimate fundamentals coach. The lack of significant recoil allows you to focus entirely on the core pillars of marksmanship without the flinch or anticipation that centerfire recoil can mask. You can refine your grip, perfect your trigger press, master sight alignment, and run countless repetitions of draw strokes and reloading drills—all at a fraction of the cost. A .22 trainer lets you diagnose and fix bad habits that centerfire shooting implicitly hides.

My preferred way to run a rimfire is with a modern semi-automatic pistol. I’ve been standardizing a lot of my fundamental training around the FN 522 Rimfire Pistol. This pistol is a purpose-built, full-sized trainer designed to mimic the weight, controls, and manual of arms of a full-power centerfire defensive pistol. It is an excellent platform for high-volume practice, focusing on everything from draw to presentation without burning a holes in your wallet with every trigger pull.

The importance of flawless, dedicated practice is paramount, especially when handling tools built for responsibility. We cannot stress this enough: adherence to the four rules of firearm safety is mandatory. Treat every .22 as loaded, practice absolute muzzle discipline, keep your finger high on the frame until the sights are aligned and you’ve made the decision to shoot, and always confirm your backstop. Respecting the serious nature of all firearms means that these training sessions are adults-only environments. We hold a strict standard that minors are never present during our focused range work. Safety must always be the first consideration.

Sourcing reliable rimfire firearms and consistent ammunition is the key to effective training. I usually get all my specialized equipment, from trainers and frames to magazines and cleaning supplies, directly from Brownells. They are a trusted legacy brand that has consistently supported the community, competitors, and responsible citizens with the professional tools needed for safe and effective practice. Don't overlook the lowly rimfire. Build a capable trainer, respect the fundamentals, and put in the reps.
