Recently when browsing the Brownells website, I noticed that there are quite a few models of the Colt King Cobra in stock. I've always been fascinated with this gun (and indeed the whole Colt revolver line) so I decided to do a short history on them today.
The Colt King Cobra made its debut in the mid-1980s, specifically in 1986. This double-action revolver was designed as a successor to the popular Colt Trooper Mark V, and it was part of Colt's renowned Snake Gun series, which included legendary models such as the Python and Anaconda. The King Cobra was introduced at a time when revolvers were still widely favored, even as semi-automatic pistols gained popularity.
True to its name, the King Cobra exudes power and strength in its design. The revolver is known for its robust construction and solid frame, providing users with a durable and reliable firearm. It was initially chambered in .357 Magnum, emphasizing its versatility for both self-defense and sporting purposes.
One distinctive feature of the King Cobra is its full underlug barrel, which not only enhances the revolver's aesthetics but also contributes to better recoil control. The six-shot cylinder ensures a balanced combination of firepower and accuracy, making it a favorite among gun enthusiasts and law enforcement professionals alike.
Over the years, the Colt King Cobra underwent various iterations and improvements. In 1988, the King Cobra Target model was introduced, featuring a longer barrel and an adjustable rear sight, catering to the needs of competitive shooters and enthusiasts who sought enhanced accuracy.
The original production run of the Colt King Cobra concluded in the 1990s, but the legend did not fade away. In 2019, Colt reintroduced the King Cobra to the market, breathing new life into this iconic revolver. The modern iteration retained the classic aesthetics while incorporating modern features such as a fiber optic front sight and a Hogue Overmolded grip for improved handling.
The Colt King Cobra has left an indelible mark on the firearms industry, earning its place as a classic and sought-after revolver. Its legacy is not only defined by its performance but also by its cultural impact. The King Cobra has appeared in various movies, TV shows, and video games, further cementing its status as a symbol of strength and reliability.
As we reflect on the history of the Colt King Cobra, it becomes evident that this revolver is more than just a firearm – it is a testament to Colt's commitment to quality and innovation. Whether admired for its elegant design, revered for its historical significance, or cherished for its performance, the Colt King Cobra remains a timeless icon in the world of firearms, continuing to captivate enthusiasts and collectors alike.
