Choking (a shotgun) is awesome

Most of us pull a new tactical shotgun out of the box and never really think twice about what's going on at the muzzle. Tactical barrels almost always ship as a standard cylinder bore. That basically means the inside of the barrel is a straight metal pipe with zero taper or constriction at the end. Running a cylinder bore is totally fine if you plan on exclusively shooting heavy lead slugs or cheap, bulk buckshot for fun. But leaving that barrel completely wide open means you are leaving a massive amount of performance on the table when you actually need to control the spread of your shot.

To understand why a choke matters, we have to talk about what's happening inside the barrel when you pull the trigger. When a 12-gauge shell fires, the burning powder creates a massive volume of expanding gas. That gas slams into the plastic wad inside the shell, forcing the flexible skirt of the wad to flare out and seal tightly against the walls of the steel bore. The plastic wad pushes the column of lead pellets down the barrel, acting like a cup to protect the soft lead from scraping against the steel. If those pellets scrape the barrel wall, they flatten out on one side. Those flat pellets catch the air the second they leave the muzzle and fly completely off target as unpredictable fliers.

When that wad reaches the end of a straight cylinder bore, it just exits. The pellets hit the open air and immediately start spreading apart. But when you thread a choke into the muzzle, the physics completely change. A choke is a tapered wall of hardened steel. When the payload hits that taper, the choke physically crushes the plastic wad and the shot column down into a much smaller diameter. This forces the lead pellets to reorganize and pack tightly together right before they exit the gun, keeping your pattern dense.

A lot of guys bolt breacher devices onto their home defense guns, assuming the breacher is just a cool-looking cylinder extension with aggressive teeth cut into the end for digging into a door frame. That is a massive misconception, and it's a great way to wreck your gun. Take the Carlson's Tactical Breacher, for example. It isn't just a spiked tube. It is explicitly cut and categorized as an extra-full constriction.Running an extra-full constriction radically alters how the gun behaves. It swages the shot cup down so aggressively that it will keep a load of standard double-ought buckshot grouped in a tight, fist-sized cluster all the way across a large room. It delivers devastating, concentrated kinetic energy. But because that constriction is so incredibly tight, it completely dictates what ammo you can safely run. If you forget what's on your muzzle and you load a solid, one-ounce lead slug, you have a massive problem. That giant chunk of solid lead is going to violently slam into that extra-full taper at fifteen hundred feet per second. The pressure spike behind the slug is immediate and massive. Best case scenario, you strip the fine threads and launch your choke downrange. Worst case, you bulge or split your barrel. When I'm setting up a shotgun and need specialized muzzle devices and choke tubes to dial in the pattern, I order them from [Brownells]. You have to know exactly what geometry is cut into the end of your barrel before you start stuffing random shells into the tube.
