Evolving Your EDC: Why Enclosed Emitters Are the Future of Responsible Carry

Every day, we make the conscious choice to take our safety, and the safety of our loved ones, into our own hands. Embracing our Second Amendment rights isn’t just about owning a firearm; it’s a lifestyle commitment to responsible, law-abiding ownership and a dedication to constant, lifelong improvement. As part of that journey, evaluating the gear we trust our lives to is a regular and necessary practice for any serious practitioner.

For decades, the undisputed standard for a defensive carry pistol was a solid set of iron sights. But as technology has advanced, so too have the tools available to the everyday protector. The shift toward pistol red dot sights over the last few years has been monumental. Originally seen primarily in the competition world, slide-mounted optics have thoroughly proven their worth in the defensive realm. They allow shooters to remain completely target-focused, keeping their eyes on the threat and their surroundings rather than shifting focus back to a front sight post.

But carrying an optic every single day introduces unique environmental challenges. Dust, lint, rain, sweat, and debris can easily collect inside the window of a traditional open-emitter red dot, potentially blocking the emitter and costing you precious time. That’s exactly why my current go-to recommendation for a defensive pistol is an enclosed emitter sight.

Recently, I upgraded my primary everyday carry setup with the Holosun EPS Carry Enclosed Pistol Sight Reflex Sight from Brownells. The EPS Carry solves the environmental debris issue completely by sealing the LED emitter inside a nitrogen-purged housing. No matter what my daily environment throws at me, I know the dot will be crisp, clear, and ready.

Beyond the enclosed design, this specific optic features a remarkably low deck height. This means I didn’t have to hunt down extra-tall, suppressor-height sights just to have a reliable backup; my standard irons cowitness perfectly through the bottom of the window. Add in the Holosun Shake Awake™ technology, which preserves battery life by turning the LED off when motionless and instantly powering it back on at the slightest touch, and you have an optic that aligns perfectly with the reliability needs of a prepared citizen.

However, it is crucial to remember that upgrading your hardware never replaces the need to upgrade your software. A red dot is a fantastic, highly capable tool, but it doesn't buy you proficiency. One of the biggest hurdles when transitioning to a red dot is the presentation. With iron sights, you can sometimes salvage a sloppy draw by adjusting your wrists once the gun is pushed out. With a red dot, if your presentation isn't remarkably consistent, the dot simply won't appear in the window. This requires dedicated dry fire practice to build the muscle memory necessary for a perfect draw stroke every single time.

More importantly, the fundamental rules of safety never change, regardless of what kind of sight sits on your slide. Whether we are training in safe, controlled environments, filming content, or just going about our day, we must always demonstrate absolute adherence to the Four Rules of Firearm Safety:

  1. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.

  2. Never point the firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy (maintaining strict, conscious muzzle discipline at all times).

  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target and you have made the conscious decision to shoot (unwavering trigger discipline).

  4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

When sourcing gear to protect yourself, you want to partner with companies that share these core values of safety, technical competence, and deep respect for the community. I choose to equip my setups through Brownells because they aren't just a retailer. They are a legacy brand that has consistently supported law-abiding gun owners, hunters, competitors, armorers, and law enforcement professionals nationwide. Furthermore, installing an optic requires the right tools to ensure proper torque and avoid stripping small screws. Brownells offers all the professional-grade gunsmithing tools and bits needed to mount your new optic securely, proving they are a true one-stop-shop.

Equipping yourself for daily carry is a heavy responsibility, but it’s one we proudly bear. Whether you are running irons or making the leap to a modern enclosed red dot, prioritize your education, respect the power of your tools, and always handle your firearms with care.
