Lower 1/3: A better way to cowitness

You finally bit the bullet, sent your pistol slide out to get milled, and bolted a brand-new red dot optic to your everyday carry gun. The next thing you absolutely have to do is install a set of backup iron sights, because electronics eventually fail. The industry default is to slap a set of towering "suppressor height" iron sights onto the slide. But the massive mistake most guys make is choosing the wrong height geometry and completely ruining the sight picture they just paid good money to get. This brings up the endless debate between an absolute co-witness and a lower 1/3 co-witness.

An absolute co-witness sounds like the perfect setup on paper. You buy irons that are exactly tall enough to sit dead center in the middle of the optic glass. When you present the gun, the red dot rests perfectly on the tip of your front sight post. The problem is that pistol optic windows are already incredibly small. When you stick a giant, solid black front post and a thick rear blade right in the dead center of a tiny glass window, you clutter the entire field of view.

More importantly, it completely wrecks the way your brain processes visual information. The entire mechanical advantage of a red dot is that it allows you to remain target-focused. You look past the gun and focus entirely on the threat, letting the dot naturally superimpose itself in your vision. But if you have massive iron sights blocking the center of the window, your eyes will naturally want to pull focus back to the front sight out of pure habit. You end up bouncing your focal plane back and forth between the dot and the irons, which drastically slows down your visual processing speed under stress.

A lower 1/3 co-witness completely solves this mechanical conflict. You install a set of iron sights that are just barely tall enough to peek over the bottom deck of the optic housing. When you look straight through the center of the glass, the irons are tucked away out of sight at the very bottom of the window. The red dot just floats in clean, empty space. You get a massive, uncluttered field of view and zero focal distractions. If the dot suddenly dies, you just drop your head a fraction of an inch, pick up the low-sitting irons through the bottom of the glass, and finish the fight.

Swapping these sights out requires proper bench tools. Pistol dovetails are incredibly tight. If you just take a brass punch and a heavy hammer to a set of tritium night sights, you can easily shatter the glass vials or crush the housing. You need a dedicated sight pusher that applies slow, parallel, mechanical leverage directly to the base of the dovetail. When I need to dial in my sight picture, I order my suppressor height sights and dedicated sight pushers from Brownells. Keep your optic window clean, tuck those irons at the bottom, and let your eyes actually do their job.
