What's been annoying me lately (aka my 1911 won't run...again)

Modern handguns have totally spoiled us when it comes to extraction. If you look at a Glock or a Sig, the extractor is a pivoting metal claw powered by a small, easily replaceable coil spring. If your modern gun stops grabbing brass reliably, you just order a new three-dollar coil spring, drop it in, and the gun is perfectly fixed. The 1911 doesn't work like that at all. John Moses Browning designed the 1911 with an internal extractor, which is essentially a solid, three-inch-long piece of spring steel. It acts as its own spring. It doesn't pivot on a pin; the entire metal shaft actually bows and flexes inside the slide every single time a round feeds up the breech face.

Because the extractor is a solid piece of steel that relies on physical deflection to grab the rim of the cartridge, it has to be manually tuned to the gun. You can't just buy a drop-in 1911 extractor and expect the pistol to run. It will almost certainly cause horrific failure-to-feed or stovepipe malfunctions right out of the box because the tension is going to be completely wrong.

Testing that tension is a purely physical process. You take the slide completely off the frame and pull the barrel out. You take a live round of .45 ACP and slide the rim up the breech face, wedging it directly under the extractor hook. The extractor should grab the rim tightly enough that you can lightly shake the slide in your hand without the bullet falling out. If the round falls out immediately, you have zero tension, and the gun will leave spent casings in the chamber. If you have to violently force the round up under the hook and it severely scrapes the brass, you have way too much tension, and the slide will bind up before it ever goes into battery.

Tuning it requires literally bending the metal. You pull the extractor halfway out of the back of the slide, insert it slightly into the firing pin channel for leverage, and manually bend the steel shaft. It takes an incredible amount of trial and error. You bend it a fraction of a millimeter, reinstall it, test it with a live round, pull it back out, and bend it again until it holds the casing perfectly.

But tension is really only half the battle. You also have to look closely at the geometry of the hook itself. The tip of the extractor hook should never actually touch the deepest part of the extraction groove on the brass casing. If it bottoms out, it loses its grip on the rim. You have to take a set of fine gunsmithing files and carefully shave the inside of the hook so that only the very edge bites into the rim of the cartridge.

You also have to file a heavy bevel on the bottom corner of the hook. The 1911 is a controlled feed design. When a round strips off the magazine, it slides upward at a steep angle. If the bottom of your extractor hook is a sharp, 90-degree corner, it will violently bite into the brass and stop the round dead in its tracks. You have to break that corner and polish it into a smooth ramp so the rim glides effortlessly up and under the claw. I grab all my replacement 1911 extractors and gunsmithing files from Brownells because tuning these parts inevitably means you're going to ruin one while you figure it out. If your 1911 is choking on ejection, stop buying different magazines. Pull the slide off, grab a live round, and start checking your tension.
